  • Art & Design

Art and Design is delivered through a structured, inclusive, and highly engaging curriculum that nurtures pupils’ creativity, sensory exploration, self-expression, and fine-motor development. Our approach recognises the diverse needs of our learners and ensures that every pupil can access, participate in, and succeed in meaningful artistic experiences.

Art is taught in a way that prioritises flexibility, routine, visual clarity, and multisensory learning so that all pupils can develop confidence and independence over time.

Across key stages, pupils revisit and build upon core Art and Design elements:

    • such as colour, line, texture, shape, form, pattern, and composition
    • through carefully sequenced projects that embed the National Curriculum aims while responding to individual EHCP outcomes.

Skills and concepts are repeated and generalised in varied contexts so pupils can secure and retain their learning.

The curriculum encourages pupils to develop from early mark-making and sensory exploration towards more intentional creativity, experimentation with media, and increased independence in planning, producing, and evaluating their artwork.

Teaching is highly scaffolded and adapted to ensure accessibility. This includes adult modelling, visual prompts, task breakdowns, predictable routines, and opportunities for supported and independent practice.

Pupils are introduced to a wide range of materials and processes:

    • such as drawing, painting, collage, modelling, printmaking, textiles, and digital media
    • with careful attention to sensory preferences, tool safety, and motor skill development.

Staff provide calm, supportive environments that promote exploration while ensuring pupils can engage without unnecessary stress or overwhelm. Art lessons incorporate opportunities to develop communication and emotional regulation.

Pupils are encouraged to make choices, express preferences, describe their work using their preferred communication method, and reflect on what they have created. The focus is on both the process and the outcome: pupils learn to enjoy creative exploration while also experiencing pride and ownership of finished pieces.

Exposure to artists, designers, and cultural art forms:

    • adapted and delivered through accessible visuals, objects, and sensory resources
    • helps pupils make meaningful connections and broadens their understanding of the world.

Throughout Art and Design, pupils build functional and transferable skills, such as fine-motor control, tool handling, spatial awareness, following sequences, planning, and problem-solving. These skills support their wider learning, independence, and personal development. Art also plays a key role in developing self-esteem, emotional wellbeing, and resilience, giving pupils the opportunity to explore personal interests in a safe and supportive environment.

Through consistent, high-quality teaching and opportunities for repetition and success, pupils at Hedgewood School build a rich portfolio of experiences and achievements in Art and Design. They develop creativity, confidence, and the ability to express themselves in diverse ways, preparing them for future learning and fostering a lifelong appreciation of the arts.
