Cultural Capital

What is ‘Cultural Capital’?

Cultural capital is the essential knowledge that children need to prepare them for their future success. It is about giving children the best possible start to their education.

At Hedgewood school, pupils benefit from a creative and ambitious curriculum that builds on what they understand and know already. We believe the exposure to valuable, long-life experiences is important to their ongoing successes.

We recognise that for our pupils to aspire and be successful in the wider areas of their lives, they need to be given rich and sustained opportunities to develop their cultural capital. We do this in many ways, for example: through our curriculum, extra-curricular activities, workshops, visits, enrichment days and community links listed in the Personal Development Policy.

Cultural capital is the accumulation of knowledge, behaviours, and skills that a child can draw upon to be successful in their education, society, and the world of work. It helps children achieve goals and become successful no matter their starting point.

We learn how to care for chicks and ducks each year, watching them hatch and grow.

We have performed at the Beck Theatre dance festival.

We care for our school environment by using our composter to reuse our food waste.

We use our dentist's room to practice oral hygiene and go for check-ups.

We love our visiting Pantomime at Hedgewood

We take part in Junior Citizenship each year.

Some classes filled shoeboxes with toys, personal care items, school supplies, and small gifts to be sent to children in need around the world.

We visit our local Charville library and borrow books.

Our Phase 3 Classes took part in the Primary Panathlon at Oakwood School and came first!

To celebrate World Down Syndrome Day, we all wore odd socks and some classes designed their own funky socks.

We received the music mark of recognition for our inclusive music education.

We celebrated science week and had a visiting magician perform for all of our classes.
