Phase 1

In Phase 1, pupils engage in early learning primarily through a play-based approach that nurtures their development in a dynamic and engaging environment. Children learn early, foundational concepts while also working on essential skills like labelling items, imitating actions, and responding to questions. These skills are crucial for academic success and support their ability to engage with the Early Years framework. In a Phase 1 class, the learning environment is curated to engage pupils and encourage them to participate in learning activities for extended periods. These activities are designed to help pupils develop skills highlighted in the VB-MAPP. Children explore a variety of subjects and topics through stimulating activities designed to enhance their communication and attention skills. Teachers draw upon the Development Matters framework and Birth to 5 milestones, ensuring that foundational knowledge across a broad spectrum of subjects is delivered in a way that resonates with young learners.

This learning is complemented by a focus on the VB-MAPP skills, as outlined in each pupil's Personal Learning Plan. Additionally, the Learning Goals represent long-term academic objectives for our pupils, which are carefully planned for and delivered through the Birth to 5 milestones. These goals guide the educational journey, ensuring that each child progresses steadily towards their full potential.

The topic cycle spans two years, providing pupils who remain in Phase 1 for extended periods the opportunity to engage in experiential learning. This approach enables them to apply their skills across a wider range of settings, encouraging greater generalisation and application of knowledge.
